Holiday Buyer's Guide 2007, Part 2

By Don Woligroski

Let's say you're a videophile, or you know one very well. All that person really wants for Christmas is a wireless connection to handle multiple high definition video streams at home. It's nearly December, but Santa has given you no indication that he's listening to this Christmas wish. What can you do about it?

Lucky for you, D-link offers its DAP-1555 Xtreme N Duo HD MediaBridge. This name may be a mouthful, but the nitty gritty for this device is that it delivers reliable, high performance wireless streaming for video, music, or data to up to five devices in your home. This includes PVRs, game consoles, or any networked media gear - and turns the local mediascape into a digital oyster.

At a casual glance, the DAP-1555 looks like any other wireless router, but...it's not!

Let's clarify how the MediaBridge works: it includes five RJ-45 network ports, enabling the DAP-1555 to connect directly to media devices (such as a game console) using network cables. The unit can receive data either from a separate Wireless N router in your home, or can attach via network cable directly to a PC.

The DAP-1555 works its magic above standard wireless Ethernet frequencies, in the Draft 802.11n wireless 5 GHz range, although it also supports older 802.11a/b/g devices as well. Of course, the unit sports typical wireless router features, such as built-in network security, a 5-port 10/100 switch, and UPnP support.

Happy holidays! Now you can stop worrying and rest assured that you can proudly display your entire collection of HD home videos to admiring friends and family without a single hitch.
