Nvidia RTX 3070 Graphics Cards to Sell out in Minutes: Newegg

Well, here we go again. Online etailer Newegg tweeted out this evening that while Nvidia's much-anticipated RTX 3070 graphics cards will debut tomorrow morning at 6am PT on shelves as expected, the retailer expects its entire inventory to sell out in mere minutes. The etailer also says that it has more inventory than it did during the previous 30-series launches, which have been plagued with constant shortages, but demand will far outstrip its supply.

Newegg says it is taking all the bot-beating measures it can to stem the flow of graphics cards to scalpers, touting that it has already stopped 'tens of millions' of bots during the RTX 3080 launch. Newegg will also limit purchases to one card per customer per 48 hours as an additional measure, though customers are free to purchase different models.

Also, of note: Newegg says not to refresh your browser too fast, or it will treat you like a bot, meaning you'll be blocked from purchasing a card.

Unfortunately, this shouldn't come as much of a surprise: Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang recently commented that he expected the shortages of RYX 3080 and 3090 Ampere cards to last until 2021. Now we know for sure that those same shortages will apply to the highly-anticipated RTX 3070 cards. The only question is just how long the shortage will persist.

Newegg's report comes after Nvidia recently postponed the RTX 3070 launch to build up a supply. Still, given the 3070's impressive 2080 Ti-like performance at a reasonable $499 price point, we can expect demand will be even greater than we've seen for the 3080 and 3090.

Perhaps this is the opening AMD needs for its RX 6000 series Big Navi graphics cards that the chipmaker revealed today. AMD says those GPUs come with ultra-competitive performance at every level of the product stack, but just as importantly, they come with TSMC's 7nm process. That means AMD might not suffer from the same shortages that we see with Nvidia's Ampere GPUs that flow from Samsung's foundries.

We're heading into the holiday season, which means we should expect the incredible demand for new graphics cards to easily continue until the end of the year. At least AMD will have its new RX 6000 series on the market soon-ish (the RX 6800 lands on November 18, and the RX 6900XT comes on December 9) to help blunt the blow.

In the end, the graphics card maker that can keep the most cards on shelves may be the winner of the holiday sales season.

Dunno about that. I think AMD gave us all a lot to think about today. If it does sell out, its not a huge loss, at least we have a worthy alternative in the near future to look forward to.

I bet AMD's new GPUs will be about as uncommon to find in store inventories as Nvidia's and won't be available in real quantities until 2021 too - too many OEMs buying everything they can straight off the manufacturers' QA queues to put holiday machines together.

Agreed. But at least the 6800 launch gives another opportunity to pick up a card in the near future instead of waiting for more stock from Nvidia.

May the odds be ever in your favor!

Exactly. It's basically a second chance. And double the chance going forwards (ok ok, not exactly double, because AMD will likely either have more or less stock than Nvidia, not the same, but you get the point), because now AMD's stock will refresh like Nvidia has been doing, etc etc.

I was able to get two cards into my cart (separately) and both went out of stock.

AMD's announcement yesterday completely killed all my enthusiasm for the 3070. Why settle for 8 GB of VRAM when I can get 16 GB?

However, I have been faking enthusiasm and excitement for the 3070 at work all this week. Scalper coworker seems to have grabbed a bunch of 3070's with his bots again, but no longer discusses details ever since the HR intervention. I hope the 3070 ends up costing him and making GPU scalping less appealing/profitable.

Best Buy had a interesting anti bot strategy this morning. First, they claimed they were releasing stock every few minutes instead of all at once and if you tried to add a card to your basket, the button went into a wait state for a little while before going back to add to cart. So you had to add it to your cart a second time after the pause. After a bit of random clicking one appeared in my cart even though I never saw a message it was added. Got a few error messages during the checkout process, but I did manage to land one. Honestly, I don't even want the card, but due to Best Buy rewards I got it for $360, which was a pretty solid deal, so not sure what I will do with it.

@spongiemaster I was able to get one into my cart, put in shipping info and when I went to payment info the card was gone.

    Congrats

" Stock sells out in minutes. " Should actually read: " Stock sells out from retailers by bots in minutes, but all the cards are now on eBay at 40% markup'.

Nvidia and scalpers are only hurting themselves at this point.... PC gamers aren't like console gamers as 2,3, and even 4 year old gaming PCs can still run games at ridiculous FPS numbers. A majority of us can wait for these cards to be overstocked and on shelves several quarters after their launch before picking them up.

Should say seconds and not minutes
